The Gate is one of the centrepieces of the Pergamon Museum in Berlin’s collection (Alamy) Symbolic of all of that splendour was a visitor’s first introduction to the city: the monumental Gate of The Ishtar Gate, named after a Mesopotamian goddess of love and war, was one of eight gateways that provided entry to the inner city of Babylon during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II (reign 605-562 The Ishtar gate was decorated with glazed brick reliefs, in tiers, of dragons and young bulls. The gate itself was a double one, and on its south side was a vast antechamber. Through the gatehouse ran a stone-and brick-paved avenue, the so-called Processional Way, which has been traced over a length of more than half a mile. The Ishtar Gate was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon. Thought to have been built around 575 BC during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II, the gate was dedicated to the Babylonian goddess Ishtar.

When the Bode Museum was opened in 1904, a section for Islamic art was created and later included in the Pergamon Museum (1950).
